CBSE asks UGC to conduct NET exam

9/27/2016

NEW DELHI: The CBSE has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to itself conduct the National Eligibility Test (NET) slated to held in January next year as the board wants to focus on its core areas and work on improving the quality of education.

According to officials, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) chairperson R K Chaturvedi has written to UGC chairperson Ved Prakash seeking that it should take over the process of conducting of the examination.

"The decision of the CBSE for not conducting UGC-NET from 2017 onwards is based on very cogent administrative reasons. It has been categorically conveyed to the UGC to take over the NET exam from January, 2017 and the Board will extend technical support if needed," a CBSE official said.

CBSE has taken the decision as it wants to focus on its core areas and work to improve on the quality of education, officials said, adding Chaturvedi had addressed his letter to the UGC chairman and not the HRD Ministry.

HRD ministry officials, who are aware of the development, said the CBSE has expressed a view that it has been holding examinations ranging from entrance to undergraduate courses, to recruitments for institutions like Kendriya Vidyalayas and UGC-NET which stretch its resources.

If it is really required, the ministry may still ask the CBSE to conduct some of the exams, they said.
